Toward the end of June, IKEA Kohoku donated furniture items (sofas, dining tables, TV stands and curtains) to the orphanage Seibo Aijien, located in Yokohama’s Naka-ku. Working from its vision of “creating a better daily life for more people,” IKEA endeavors to exert a positive influence on the environment and society. IKEA has thus embraced a sustainability strategy running through 2020 called “PEOPLE & PLANET POSITIVE”, which seeks to engage in a variety of altruistic activity. One key aspect of PEOPLE & PLANET POSITIVE is “providing a better way of life for people and the community.” One way of realizing this is through the donation of goods.
The items donated to Seibo Aijien were the fulfillment of the orphanage’s request through our Swipe and Donate campaign, which ran last September.* Seibo Aijien is the largest orphanage in the city. Through its child consultation center, it accepts children under the age of 18 in need of care for a variety of reasons. The orphanage looks after each child, fostering their development so that they live as a healthy member of society in mind and body. It is IKEA’s sincere hope that the items donated help provide them more comfortable living standards. On the day of the delivery, the store manager and a group of employees also visited Seibo Aijien to assemble and install the products together.
We believe that corporate social responsibility has both local and global significance. Beyond this single donation, IKEA Kohoku will continue to pursue its vision of “providing a better way of life for people and the community” through a cooperative sustainability agreement with Yokohama City.
