Kamakura’s Rudy Brew is a craft beer bar that blends Western culture and cuisine with a solid dose of Japanese beer. Energetic punk rock and ska provide a driving but unobtrusive musical background for this street-level establishment, which recently celebrated its first year. Just outside Kamakura Station’s east exit opposite the popular Komachidori shopping street, it makes for a great stop after a day of touring the city.
Bar manager Jeremy Kircher is a transplant from the U.S. He runs the small bar with help from his wife Miku Yoshimura. Kircher grew up in Pennsylvania and spent 10 years in Hawaii before coming to Japan. This is reflected in the menu. Try the Philly Cheese Steak (¥1050) for a taste of Pennsylvania’s most famous sandwich. If you want some Hawaiian-style fare, go with the Ahi Poke or Garlic Shrimp (both ¥1050). The menu provides recommendations for beer pairing for each dish to assist you in choosing an appropriate brew–helpful for those new to craft beer.
Speaking of which, Rudy Brew has nine taps pouring predominantly Japanese craft (150ml ¥450~ / 300ml ¥750~ / 473ml ¥950~) complemented by a small fridge of bottle beers (¥1050~). A page of wine (glass ¥800 / bottle ¥4000), pint-glass cocktails (¥700), and non-alcoholic beverages completes the drinks menu. Take-out beers are also available in plastic cups (¥750~).
The term “rudy” is short for “rude boy/girl”, Jamaican street-culture slang for ska fans, such as Kircher. But don’t let the name dissuade you from bringing your family–the service and atmosphere is far from rude. Children are also welcome in this non-smoking bar. There is seating for about 15 inside with a standing table outside perfect for warm weather.
