On opening the door to On the Earth, you hear the sound of a ship whistle blowing. It makes you feel as if you’re definitely in the port of Yokohama. Insurance man-turned-bartender-owner Hirofumi Mizutani opened this hideaway-style bar in 2005, hoping to create a comfortable space for everyone to enjoy fine drinks and music. Whether you’re there for an after-work drink or a romantic date, you’ll be greeted by Mizutani’s friendly smile and feel-good music.
Regulars love to sit at the wide, wooden counter to enjoy single malt whisky and bourbon, with many varieties available from ¥700 to ¥1150. Frozen cocktails with seasonal fresh fruit are perfect for cooling down your summer evenings. The Mango Frozen Cocktail (¥1300) transports you to a hammock on a beautiful beach. Speaking of tropical drinks, try the ultimate Mojito (¥1200), packed with plenty of fresh mint. It’s the best selling cocktail here all through the year.
You can also find a nice list of carefully prepared food items that pair well with drinks and range from ¥500 to ¥1000. The Dried Fig with Cream Cheese (¥700) goes well with any whiskey. If you’re hungry, try the Blue Cheese Pizza (¥800) with a touch of honey. The Ginger Marinated with Soy Sauce (¥600) harmonizes perfectly with the icy cold Moscow Mule (¥1000) served in a copper mug. On the Earth has no table charge.
The bar is named after Mizutani’s favorite old music TV show. Between shaking, stirring and pouring, he selects mood-appropriate music from his collection of over 300 CDs, just like a DJ. “You don’t need to dress up to come to my bar. We’re all friends on the same earth after all,” says Mizutani, who seldom wears a tie. On Fridays, he plays more up-tempo music to celebrate the start of the weekend. Don’t feel like you need to wait for Friday to visit, though!
