Konohana translates as “flowering trees” and there is probably no better metaphor for the delicacies you’ll find on the menu at this traditional Japanese restaurant. Konohana overlooks a beautiful Japanese garden and, when you visit, you’ll feel like a VIP who has been escorted to some ancient temple in Kyoto. The garden and the presentation of the food complement the fresh and delicate seasonal ingredients you’ll find in each dish.
The restaurant naturally offers a delectable range of authentic, Japanese cuisine. The name of the course we had the pleasure of trying was “Saizen,” meaning “colorful dishes.” It was aptly named and delicious. Some of the items served included tempura conger (hard-to-prepare but tasty eel), tempura octopus, fresh cucumber with hints of ginger, sesame cream served over figs, squid and tuna served with plum sauce and junsai (“water shield” vegetables). The chef changes the course (a mere ¥5390) every month to feature seasonal ingredients.
Whatever food is served at Konohana, rest assured that there is no shortage of sake to pair with the delicate flavors. The restaurant carries 22 different brands, including three that may seem a little pricey, but are high-end and will definitely elevate your experience of the dinner. Served in 180cc sizes, they are KoNoHaNa (Kyoto, ¥1870), Urakasumi Zen (Miyagi, ¥1,980) and Kubota Manju (Niigata, ¥3,300). A sake sommelier has designed the sake menu, so if you want to try something else, you won’t be making a mistake.Konohana occupies most of the 8th floor of the elegant Bay Sheraton Hotel, with table arrangements that are suitable for any occasion, whether a romantic date or a large family affair. Please make a reservation at least three days in advance. Service in English is also available.
