Cafe Geek’s bright, airy layout and relaxed feel make it instantly endearing to any coffee shop buff. A varied decor of plants, assorted artwork, trinkets and reading material lend it its character. The mood is set by a steady flow of mellow, Western rock classics streaming unobtrusively in the background. But like any good cafe, it’s the staff that put it over the top.
Cafe Geek is run by affable husband-wife team Yu Akimoto and Ji-hyoung Yu. They serve every order with a pleasant profusion of smiles–something that makes it easy to become a regular. The couple wanted to create an atmosphere for the studious (AKA geeks) to get cozy with a book or laptop. For anyone just casually stopping by, there is a small collection of books and magazines available to peruse. When not busy, the couple are happy to chat with customers.
The lunchtime (11:30~14:00) menu consists of around 10 sets (¥730~) with mix-and-match options available featuring tacos, bulgogi, pasta, and sandwiches with bread made daily at the cafe. Simpler drink and croissant sets (¥550) are offered during breakfast time (9:00~11:00). Homemade dessert items like cheesecake (¥500) or American waffles (¥590) will satisfy those with a sweet tooth. The signature lattes (S ¥420~ /M ¥500~) come with “GEEK” cleverly stenciled in cinnamon and chocolate. Herb teas, fruit sodas, and hot/iced chocolate round out the drink menu. Leaving after one cup may be difficult.
Seating inside ranges from a small sofa to counter spots with accommodating charging outlets. Tables outside facing the Ooka River make for an excellent choice in nice weather. The locale makes it a great pit stop when you are out for a riverside walk, especially during cherry blossom season.
