Bruntons is not your average beer bar, possessing style and sophistication that set it apart from other establishments. The rowdy atmosphere so common at a sports bars is absent, too. This is a place where people with discerning tastes come to appreciate good beer in a calm, cozy atmosphere. With five bar seats and a few small tables, it can certainly seem intimate.
The bar will not disappoint serious craft beer fans. The staff is knowledgeable and very particular about a correct pour. When we visited they had a healthy selection of craft beers from all parts of Japan, including Ebina Beer (Kanagawa), Voyager (Wakayama), and Campion (Tokyo). There are six taps and guests can order by the US pint (¥1200~), 280ml glass (¥700~) or a three beer flight (¥1200). The owner, Kumiko Kawano, is actually involved in some brewing activities herself, and supports organizations for the empowerment of female brewers such as the Pink Boots Society.
Bruntons is located in the historic Motomachi district. Yokohama history buffs will be pleased to discover the unique collection of historic ukiyo-e prints of the city displayed on the walls. One is an original. Others may appreciate the novelty of the vintage top hat hanging near the entrance. That hat is a tribute to the late Richard Henry Brunton after whom the bar is named. Brunton was a Scottish engineer active in Japan during the Meiji era and was known as the “Father of Japanese lighthouses”. Brunton also surveyed and drew the first detailed maps of Yokohama, and made many contributions to the city’s infrastructure.
If you’re hungry there is a nice selection of finger food that pairs well with beer. We enjoyed the tasty homemade pickles (¥500) and hummus (¥800). Bruntons is a non-smoking establishment. They also offer free wi-fi.
