Thank goodness for this decent Mexican-style restaurant in central Yokohama! Aztecas is actually one of the few Mexican restaurants we know of in the greater Yokohama region, which is unfortunate for such a large city. Beyond the appetizing food in a comfortable, subdued environment, the restaurant’s extensive drink menu alone makes it worthwhile to visit.
Fairly typical appetizers will whet your palate, most of them less than ¥1000. Salsa, guacamole, quesadillas and ceviche all make for some light snacking, while larger, traditional “Burrito Azteca” and some other selections closer to light meals are available as well. Main dishes offer plenty of volume, perhaps even enough to share. Grilled chicken dishes are common, including Enchiladas (¥1300), Pollo al Chipotle (chicken w/chipotle sauce; ¥1600), or Pollo en Salsa Verde (chicken with chilli and green tomato sauce; ¥1600). Want to splurge a little? Try some steak dishes for ¥1800 like the Carne Asada a la Tampiqueña (chopped, grilled steak w/rice, veggies and tortillas). For sides, there are several salads starting from ¥700, soups from ¥650, and assorted munchies like corn chips from ¥350. If you’re coming with some serious hunger, then check out the Mexican Party Courses (minimum 2 people) from ¥3000. They come with eight items that rotate (depending on availability) and will surely fill you. For another ¥2500 you can enjoy all-you-can-drink for two hours.
As we suggested, you’ll definitely want to browse the drink menu. It’s several pages of wines, cocktails, and our favorite when we’re dining on Mexican: frozen drinks for ¥1000. Both the margaritas and daiquiris are worth trying, and no so strong they’ll lay you flat. But if you’re looking to party, you’ll be pleased to know they offer frozen cocktail pitchers for ¥4500.
We’re accustomed to Mexican restaurants being somewhat bright, even gaudy, but the dim, attractive interior is more on the classy, formal side. It’s perfect for a date or with friends.
