On April 16th, American craft beer bar Antenna America hosted a party on Zushi Beach with San Diego-based craft brewery Coronado. Clad in laid-back beach attire, the president of Coronado, Rick Chapman, and VP of sales & marketing, Brandon Richards, mingled with guests beachside at Kuromon Cafe Nagisagoya. The two men chatted up hundreds of local fans over beers, surprising many with their easy-going, very approachable nature. Chapman turned down no requests for picture opportunities and social media in the Yokohama area was likely flooded with his image. This isn’t the first time Coronado has visited Yokohama. In 2013, they…

Regular runners know the cycling and walking paths alongside Tama River are great for long, relatively flat training runs. Those who enter races in Japan know organizers normally open registration months in advance, provide a brief window for entries (popular races “sell out” within hours), and close registration months ahead of time. The annual TELL Charity Walk & Run is different, offering both pre-registration and registration on the day, as well as a comfortable starting hour. The event also provides a chance to run 5K or 10K on a fast, flat course. It is a family-oriented day that supports a…
In Nepal they ferment them. In India they pickle them. At Green. . . You guessed it! We grill ‘em with a light glaze of Smokey BBQ Sauce. Ingredients Fresh bamboo shoot (outer leaves removed) 1 Water to cover Rice bran (nuka) 40g Dried red chili peppers 2 Your preferred BBQ sauce Procedure There are many ways to remove the bitterness from bamboo shoots. We use the Japanese method. In a large pot with plenty of water, add chilli peppers and rice bran. Weigh down the bamboo shoots with a ceramic dish or similar so they don’t float. Boil until a skewer…
For this month I’d like to write about a new project for Lorega in the Philippines, which I introduced several months ago. There is an NPOrun by Keio University students, called HOPE, which supports children in Lorega on the island of Cebu. It’s an old Japanese graveyard where squatters now live, including many children without official registration. They are therefore not able to receive proper medical care or education, and often become the victims of drugs and child prostitution. It’s not easy for the children of Lorega to leave the area and so they don’t have any objective perspective of…
Golden Week is one of the busiest travel times of the year in Japan. Clogged highways, jam-packed trains, crowded airports (and overpriced flights). It’s no surprise so many people decide to just stay in their hometown. If you are one of those people and live in Yokohama, then lucky you! What better place to be stuck for the holidays than Yokohama?! The slower pace of this big city will help make your holidays actually relaxing. After the Golden Week holidays, we enter a period of some of the most pleasant weather in Yokohama. The days are warm, but not yet…
From the minute you walk into Craftsman Yokohama, you know you’re in for a treat. The long line of taps in a half circle of copper piping that encircles the bar catches your eye immediately. With a stylish interior and open kitchen, it makes for a great place to entertain a date or business clients. The range of selections available is quite impressive; both the drinks and food menu will leave you in a conundrum of choices. Let’s start with the beers. Craftsman Yokohama has 31 on tap, ranging from Japanese standard pilsners like Asahi, Kirin and Sapporo (all ¥550)…
Ah, the smell of spring is in the air. The days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer, and the cherry trees are waking from their winter slumber. More and more the outdoors are beckoning us to come out and play. The hanami season has arrived. In Japan, sharing some sake under a cherry tree with friends is almost a seasonal requirement– of course, one that everyone is happy to oblige. Then as April nears its end, hanami parties give way to the festive Golden Week. We’ve highlighted a bunch of events in our Spotlight section for the extended…
Trendy new restaurant? Check. Espresso and pastries? Check, check. Great atmosphere, harborside dining and even good beer? Check, check, check. Combining a California-style restaurant with the Brooklyn Roasting Company’s coffee and beer, &Swell exudes an interesting American east coast meets west coast feel. Located in the new bayside Marine & Walk Yokohama shopping area, which opened last month, it will surely prove to be an extremely popular destination for weary shoppers and hipsters alike. The open kitchen of &Swell faces the dining area, so you can watch your food being prepared while you sip on a beverage. The drink menu’s…
Among photographers that people truly look up to, Herbie Yamaguchi stands out as one revered by all. That includes me. I remember the first time I asked him to run a workshop for us: I was just one of all the other excited fans. Herbie’s way of life inspires the dreams of young photographers. It’s because he has proven that if you just recognize your dream and work toward it step by step, then it’s within your power to realize it. Whenever you talk to Herbie, you get the courage to take that step that you weren’t able to take…
