Yokohama is a sightseeing area that is also rich in the arts. The city, in fact, sponsors many art-related workshops. So do many private organizations and businesses. Among the many possibilities for workshops, one immediately comes to my mind: photography. Yokohama was actually one of world’s pioneering cities of photography. Wouldn’t it be great if, as a part of the tourist experience, there were also photography workshops offered? I’m not talking about employing the conveniences of digital machines, but workshop experiences involving analog photography. Just think: what would it be like to actually create photographs using the gelatin silver process,…

Climbing a tree to some secret hideout was the kind of play a lot of us probably engaged in during our childhoods. Maybe you even once thought you’d like to live in a treehouse. It’s easy to forget such dreams in the daily grind of city life, but would you believe that right here in our figurative backyard of Yokohama, there is actually a cafe that will titillate that childhood heart of yours? *content sponsored by IKEA June is “Sustainability Month” We at IKEA signed an agreement with Yokohama City in September 2015, to practice stewardship of the environment and create a more sustainable society. Another principal we agreed on was the promotion of locally-produced food. Consumption of locally-produced food has a positive effect on the environment by reducing the distance from farm to market, thereby reducing carbon dioxide. In honor of Sustainability Month, this June we will have a local farmers’ market every Sunday at IKEA Kohoku’s entrance (10:00-13:00), where guests will be able to purchase freshly harvested vegetables from Tsuzuki-ku. Lead…

On April 16th, American craft beer bar Antenna America hosted a party on Zushi Beach with San Diego-based craft brewery Coronado. Clad in laid-back beach attire, the president of Coronado, Rick Chapman, and VP of sales & marketing, Brandon Richards, mingled with guests beachside at Kuromon Cafe Nagisagoya. The two men chatted up hundreds of local fans over beers, surprising many with their easy-going, very approachable nature. Chapman turned down no requests for picture opportunities and social media in the Yokohama area was likely flooded with his image. This isn’t the first time Coronado has visited Yokohama. In 2013, they…

Regular runners know the cycling and walking paths alongside Tama River are great for long, relatively flat training runs. Those who enter races in Japan know organizers normally open registration months in advance, provide a brief window for entries (popular races “sell out” within hours), and close registration months ahead of time. The annual TELL Charity Walk & Run is different, offering both pre-registration and registration on the day, as well as a comfortable starting hour. The event also provides a chance to run 5K or 10K on a fast, flat course. It is a family-oriented day that supports a…

For this month I’d like to write about a new project for Lorega in the Philippines, which I introduced several months ago. There is an NPOrun by Keio University students, called HOPE, which supports children in Lorega on the island of Cebu. It’s an old Japanese graveyard where squatters now live, including many children without official registration. They are therefore not able to receive proper medical care or education, and often become the victims of drugs and child prostitution. It’s not easy for the children of Lorega to leave the area and so they don’t have any objective perspective of…

What better place to be stuck for the holidays than Yokohama?! The slower pace of this big city will help make your holidays actually relaxing. After the Golden Week holidays, we enter a period of some of the most pleasant weather in Yokohama. The days are warm, but not yet…

From the minute you walk into Craftsman Yokohama, you know you’re in for a treat. The long line of taps in a half circle of copper piping that encircles the bar catches your eye immediately. With a stylish interior and open kitchen, it makes for a great place to entertain a date or business clients. The range of selections available is quite impressive; both the drinks and food menu will leave you in a conundrum of choices. Let’s start with the beers. Craftsman Yokohama has 31 on tap, ranging from Japanese standard pilsners like Asahi, Kirin and Sapporo (all ¥550)…
