San-chome Rigatto is a beautifully renovated, two-story Italian restaurant with attractive woodwork throughout the interior and plenty of open space. The aroma of food cooking on the grill of the long open kitchen greets you at the entrance before it wafts up to the quaint second-floor loft. Your mouth will be watering before you even take your seat. While the cuisine is Italian-focused, there are also many fusion creations dreamed up by the chefs. We got the meal started with Gobo (burdock root) Balsamico (¥580) followed by Kani (crab) Cream Croquettes in American-style sauce…

Gather @Eating House, as the name implies, is the perfect place to gather all your friends for a fun and casual night out. The first thing you’ll notice walking in is the wide open interior–high ceilings, large windows and the spacious dining area create a relaxed and inviting atmosphere which allows guests to move around as they please. You can enjoy a hearty meal at a table or hang out at the open bar in the middle of the restaurant while watching TV with a cold beer in hand. The large patio outside faces Akarenga and the port area– a…
As a harbor town Yokohama is fortunate to have access to a great variety of fresh seafood. Many people are familiar with Tokyo’s Tsukiji Fish Market (mostly relocated to Toyosu now), but few know that Yokohama has its own busy marketplace. It’s usually open only to professionals in the food industry, but on two Saturdays per month the market is made accessible to the general public from 9:00 to 11:00 in the morning. For the full experience, arrive early to eat some fish fresh off the boat at one of the ten or so small restaurants located to the right…
Between February 25th and March 3rd, in Minatomirai Station’s Mirai Tube, a photo exhibition was held featuring Herbie Yamaguchi and Ema Ito called “Photo Yokohama 2019 Special Project: Square Duo Exhibit”. Ten years! That’s how long the Yokohama Seasider has been in publication with this issue. Ten years is a long time to do anything, and we’ve made it this far through the generous support of sponsors, hundreds of businesses that distribute us, and of course you, our dear readers. Thank you all! Media is a tough business and it’s not getting easier. We push on knowing that we support the Yokohama community, both residents and visitors. If you have a chance, please thank one (or more) of our sponsors, or the business near you that carries this magazine. I’ve been…
Cafe de Lento is a gem tucked away on the fringes of Motomachi. Stepping inside the cafe is like entering a Parisian coffee shop–it’s cozy, chic and incredibly serene. The dark wood furniture adds an elegant, modern touch to the simple interior and the hanging lights cast a warm glow that creates a peaceful atmosphere. You can take a group of friends with you or come alone to escape reality for a couple of hours and have some quiet time to yourself. It’s the perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon reading a book while enjoying a cup of coffee,…
Late last year while doing some serious cleaning at home, I uncovered these photos. The person in the center with the bride’s headdress is my mom. According to her, this is actual wedding ceremony attire, but it isn’t from her own wedding; it turns out it’s a photo from when she modeled bridal wear in her early 20s. That makes the photo over 60 years old. If you look closely, “Matsuoka Bizan” is written on the bottom right. You can even clearly read the address and phone number. Looking up the address I discovered it was only a few minutes…
Fueled by a desire to have a local brewpub in his neighborhood of Kanazawa Bunko, Shintaro Takahashi converted a two-story residence into the Minami Yokohama Beer Lab about three years ago. On entering the “lab”, a hallway snakes past a 150-liter brew system on the first floor and up a flight of narrow stairs to the pub. The second-floor area is split between counter and table seating in front of an open kitchen and a homey Japanese-style tatami (straw mat) room, a remnant of the previous resident’s living room. Takahashi convinced high school classmate Shoichi Arai to join the…
The interior and atmosphere of Byrd’s GRILL & BAR are reminiscent of a traditional American-style sports bar. TV screens above the well-stocked bar broadcast a variety of sporting events and shows. Red checkered tablecloths add a sense of being in a local US diner. The menu is loaded with popular US favorites like burgers, pizza, wings and clam chowder with an additional focus on Cal-Mex cuisine like enchiladas, tacos, quesadillas and jalapeño poppers. For starters, I ordered a 300g Rib Eye Steak (¥3600 / 450g, ¥4800 / 600g, ¥6300), which was simply seasoned to accentuate the savory flavor of the…
Brrrrrrr. It’s chilly outside. But never too cold to venture out into this city of warm people and welcoming businesses. Also, plum blossoms are blooming so there’s ample beauty to see outside in the cold. We wonder if you set any New Year’s resolutions. It’s not too late! (Allow yourself to back-date them a month) We’ve got some ideas for you: why not make a resolution that involves Yokohama. For example, each month, try a restaurant you’ve never visited. Every weekend, stroll through a neighborhood you’re unfamiliar with. In the spirit of our monthly photography culture column, why not try…
