Tinys Yokohama Hinodecho is one of the city’s newest cultural venues. In between the ‘small houses’ under the railway, they have an event space where they hold talk shows and film screenings every week.
“A Saturday With Books” is a book fair which has been held every two months, originally in Nihonbashi. YADOKARI, the company that runs Tinys, was initially located in that neighborhood before moving operations to Yokohama. Some of those that run the weekend book stalls have unrelated day jobs. As a hobby they sell used books at various book fairs like this in their free time. Some even have their own bookshelves with books they’ve selected to sell in the corner of cafés or bookstores.
Each event has a different theme. The previous one was “Honest Work”. The selections varied from books revolving around the trend toward small entrepreneurial business, to those portraying the differing lifestyles of people from all walks of life, to some unexpected but related inclusions. The books say a lot about the sellers, and this makes it easy to start up conversations with them.
The event’s theme in July is “Alcohol”. It might be full of hard-boiled fiction with drunk detectives or travel guides to underground bars. It’ll be worth it to take a stroll along the Ookagawa River to go there and find out firsthand. Of course, you can order craft beer and cocktails at the bar to stick with the theme.
Other events being held this month include a screening of the Italian film “TRANSUMANZA TOUR” on 7/16 and a seminar about Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on 7/18.
